The EU Guidance Notes on the classification of food extracts with colouring properties has presently been removed from the Commission website. The website now mentions that “The guidance document is currently being reviewed by the Commission services.” We are advised that this is part of a general legal review of all Commission Guidance Notes.
Even if currently not publicly available through the Commission website, the Regulation that these Guidance Notes are based on is unchanged. Therefore, the principle behind the Guidance Notes we believe still remain valid and in effect throughout this legal review process. Thus, our members and wider food industry continue to operate according to this Guidance Notes.
NATCOL, as the only Association of colouring food producers in Europe, was actively involved in the creation and establishment of the EU Guidance Notes on the classification of food extracts with colouring properties and considers it an essential tool for classification when considering whether a substance is an additive colour or a colouring food, pursuant to the definitions of colour additives given in Regulation (EC) No 1333/2008.
NATCOL continues to make available its expertise during this legal review process.
